Hello Sailor!

How to build a website so that it can be used by people dialing up on a satellite phone.

Another benefit of building a website to a high standard of accessibility. Whenever we come across a new circumstance in which people want to access a website in non-standard way, it always turns out that an accessible site is already built for the purpose.

So any site using this system, for instance, will be OK.

Slugger bandwidth choked

The award-winning Slugger O'Toole weblog was suspended by it's ISP for because they have attracted too many eyeballs. On tuesday, visitors were greeted with a message saying that the site had exceeded it's bandwidth limit and would you kindly come back when they've paid their bill (or words to that effect).

Slugger has only one shortcoming. They urge visitors to make a donation to help pay for the site's upkeep, but it is almost impossible to find the 'donate' button. And when you do, it's not working. (Try the 'make a donation' link - it may be back up later).

Too much pressure

The Hansard Society have criticised the UK Parliament website.

Putting the 'e' in front of democracy has undoubedly created real opportunities to improve governance. Pressure groups have changed some aspects of their work almost beyond recognition.

But if there is one aspect in which us techies have let civil society down, it is the way that we've allowed representative democracy become the poor relation.
